AI developers now license records of real work from companies: support tickets, CRM histories, call recordings, project documentation and contracts. This dataset shows, industry by industry, how many companies visibly run the systems where those records live. It is the data behind the paper Which Companies Hold the Data AI Labs Buy? A Census of Operational Software Across 21 US Industries.

Population. 101,811 active US companies in 21 industries, about 5,000 per industry, drawn from an index of about 120 million classified web domains and checked for fit with each industry definition. Expired, parked, error and placeholder domains are excluded, and so are companies showing a closure signal. The population favours established companies with a real web presence.
Software. A product is counted when it is observable in the company's public internet footprint, and mapped to one of 13 operational data types. No private system is accessed, and the data records that a system is used, never what it contains.
Lower bound. Many systems leave no public trace, so every share is a minimum. Code hosting in particular is rarely observable from public information. Products observed at fewer than 10 companies in an industry are left out of the product file.
